Description

Born after the Korean War, this fusion stew combines American ingredients (spam, hot dogs) with Korean flavors. Fun to make and share!

Ingredients

  • 1 can spam, sliced
  • 4 hot dogs, sliced
  • 8 oz tofu, cubed
  • 2 cups kimchi, chopped
  • 1 package instant ramen noodles
  • 2 cups Napa cabbage, chopped
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken or anchovy broth
  • 2 tablespoons gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • American cheese slices (yes, really!)
  • Rice cakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Arrange ingredients in a large pot or electric skillet in sections: spam, hot dogs, tofu, kimchi, cabbage, onion.
  2. Mix broth with gochugaru, gochujang, soy sauce, and garlic. Pour over ingredients.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Add ramen noodles (discard seasoning packet). Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  5. Place cheese slices on top. Let melt slightly.
  6. Garnish with green onions.
  7. Serve family-style from the pot. Everyone gets a bowl of broth, noodles, and ingredients!
