Ingredients

  • FOR BULGOGI:
  • 1.5 lbs ribeye or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 Asian pear, grated (or 2 tablespoons sugar)
  • FOR SERVING:
  • 4 cups cooked rice
  • Kimchi
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Make marinade: Combine soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, green onions, mirin, and pear in a bowl.
  2. Add thinly sliced beef and massage marinade into meat. Marinate for at least 2 hours (or up to 24 hours).
  3. Heat a large skillet or grill pan over high heat.
  4. Cook beef in batches (don't overcrowd!) for 2-3 minutes per side until caramelized.
  5. Assemble bowls: rice, bulgogi, kimchi, cucumber, lettuce.
  6. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Optional: Wrap beef in lettuce leaves with rice and kimchi for Korean BBQ experience!

💡 Student Tips

Slicing Tip: Freeze beef for 30 minutes before slicing - much easier to cut thin!

Pear Power: Asian pear tenderizes meat naturally. Can't find it? Use kiwi or extra sugar.

Grill It: This is AMAZING on a real grill. Perfect for summer cookouts!
